Government surveys show that 3.1 million people age 12 and older have misused OTC medications in their lifetime—with nearly 5 percent of misuse among those younger than 18. Nearly 5 percent of 10th graders and nearly 6 percent of high school seniors report abusing cough medicines containing dextromethorphan.

In 2011, 2.7% of 8th graders reported having used over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to get high. For 10th and 12th graders, the number was higher – more than 5%.
